about

At 72 years old, John Rowan presents his debut 8 track EP ‘The Dawning of The Day’, a collection of folk and traditional songs covered in his own unique acoustic style.
If it is unusual for someone to release a first musical project at 72, it is a credit to the standard of his vocals that it stands with timeless quality. Originally recorded by his son, this project has been professionally mixed, but it is John’s calibre as a performer that makes the EP transcend a standard live recording.
From the trenches of the First World War (‘Hanging on The Old Barbed Wire’), via Caribbean childrens’ songs (‘Long Time Girl I Never See You’) and an achingly beautiful acapella version of ‘On Raglan Road’, each of these carefully curated numbers is soaked in a lifetime of singing.
With Irish origins, John grew up in Burnley, singing with his extended family and also at local gatherings. He joined the army at 16 and travelled the world before settling in Worcester where he regularly sang at local clubs. After bringing up his four children in Leicester, he retired to Stratford-Upon-Avon. Loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren scattered across the UK and Europe, the music adored by each generation is now available for all to hear.
